Some Scary Stats About Health

We live in an age of convenience. Whatever we want, we can have delivered to our doors - increasingly within minutes rather than hours or days. This convenience is useful, we’ve all experienced the struggles of being time-poor so where we can make our lives easier, we jump at the chance.

But does this convenience come at the risk of our own well-being? The latest research from AIA/Sovereign gives us some food for thought.

The Stats

63% of deaths worldwide today are caused by four main non-communicable diseases. NCD’s are generally the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and/or behavior factors and not passed on from person to person.

This number is expected to increase to 80% by 2030 and in New Zealand, NCD’s are responsible for almost 90% of deaths.

There are four main risk factors driving this prevalence of NCD’s:

  • Physical inactivity

  • Unhealthy diet

  • Smoking

  • Excess alcohol

Whilst the combination of risk factors sounds like a great weekend, the results are worrying. Our lifestyles are becoming increasingly less congruent to our own quality of life.

FoxPlan and Health

When we build a financial plan at FoxPlan, it isn’t just about the money. Our four cornerstones of financial planning are health, wealth, habits and relationships. If there is no solid foundation in each area, the long-term plan for your retirement may not be achieved.

It’s simple really. No-one wants to get to retirement, financially ready with all the resources available they have spent their working life towards to have to instead spend their funds on healthcare, medication and accessibility rather than leisure.

Some food for thought as we head in to the second quarter of 2019.
